TSIAMALILI: CARTERETS ISLANDERS URGENTLY NEEDS ASSISTANCE

Bougainville Regional MP, Peter Tsiamalili says the plight of the Carterets Islanders who have been severely affected by climate change needs immediate action by relevant authorities to address the issue which has been outstanding for a long time

Mr Tsiamalili was part of a high-level delegation comprising of the Environment and Conservation and Climate Change Minister, Wera Mori, Bougainville President Ishmael Toroama, donor partners and Autonomous Bougainville Government officials that visited the Carterets Islands last week.

Mr Tsiamalili highlighted that rising sea levels have greatly affected the people who are now on the brink of starvation as they cannot grow food crops due to the high salt content in the soil.

He thanked the national government, minister Mori and the representatives of the governments of the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States for visiting the islands and seeing firsthand how his people are being affected by climate change.
