About 6.3 million m3 of rainforest logs worth over US$1 billion have been exported from PNG

Since 2009, about 6.3 million m3 of rainforest logs worth over US$1 billion have been exported from PNG under the SABL scam.

Very little of the money or benefits have gone to local PNG communities. PNG has lost over 60% of its forest cover to logging, devastating local indigenous and wildlife populations alike.

The largest company doing illegal logging in PNG is Malaysian-owned Rimbunan Hijau, which also logs in China, Brazil, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, and Vanuatu.

Forestry experts consider Rimbunan Hijau one of the most damaging and irresponsible global logging companies.

Besides controlling 80% of logging in the country, Rimbunan Hijau also owns one of the country’s two national newspapers.
